Global Journalist: India's press freedom problems India ranks abysmally low at 133 among 180 countries in the latest annual World Press Freedom Index, which says Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems “indifferent” to the threats against journalists. The 2016 ‘World Press Freedom Index’ released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is led by Finland, which retained its top spot for the sixth consecutive year, followed by Netherlands and Norway. India jumped three spots from the 136th position it had in 2015. “Journalists and bloggers are attacked and anathematised by various religious groups that are quick to take offense,” the report said. At the same time, it is hard for journalists to cover regions such as Kashmir that are regarded as sensitive by the government, it said. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems indifferent to these threats and problems, and there is no mechanism for protecting journalists,” the report said. “Instead, in a desire to increase control of media coverage, Modi envisages opening a journalism university run by former propaganda ministry officials,” it alleged, without substantiating what it refers to. Among India’s neighbouring countries, Pakistan ranks 147, Sri Lanka (141), Afghanistan (120), Bangladesh (144), Nepal (105) and Bhutan (94). China is ranked 176. The United States is ranked 44th and Russia is placed at the 148th place. The report shows that there has been a deep and disturbing decline in respect for media freedom at both the global and regional levels. We are living in a time when sensationalism has taken over journalism; when hysteria and sycophancy are peddled in the name of journalism. From being the fourth pillar of democracy, a large section of the national media has transformed into “fourth pillar of the establishment”. From being the voice of the voiceless, we are witnessing its transformation into a mouth piece of the ruling elite. And in a strange reversal of roles, the supine media wants to hold the opposition responsible for the failures of the government! The so-called journalists do not tire of singing praises of those in power, making the main stream media their veritable propaganda arm. As soon as you start taking favours from the government and praising it instead of holding it to account for its failures, you cease to be a journalist. We strongly reject this “establishment media”. The media has evolved from print to electronic media to web to social media but it has been consumed by “selfie journalism” and “nationalistic journalism” hyper-ventilating at the drop of a hat. This TRP-led “journalism” is the scourge of democracy. It is unacceptable! Our initiative, the Free Press, is a miniscule attempt to restore the responsibility of journalism. We will strive to once again, make delivering news to the people, the primary function of journalists. We will provide unadulterated news, opinions of experts and analysis of the media landscape to spread awareness of the blatant propaganda by the “establishment media”. We pledge to keep press free and journalism clean; it is our motto, and we aim to always uphold it.

India is the world’s largest democracy, with a population of more than one point two billion people. It’s also an incredibly diverse place where people speak more than one hundred different languages. The media environment in India reflects its diversity. There are 90,000 different print publications and more than 700 television stations and there is vibrant debate and criticism of government policies. But on a number of fronts, the freedom of expression and freedom of the press is facing threats in the world’s second most populous country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu-nationalist party have accused three television companies of violating broadcasting regulations for their reporting on a terrorism case. Books deemed offensive to Hinduism have been pulled from book shelves and authors threatened. Journalists routinely face threats, particularly in the countryside. At least six have been killed this year, according to the International Federation of Journalists. On this edition of Global Journalist, a look inside India’s ongoing struggle with press freedom, and how things look for the future. Our guests this week: *Shubhranshu Choudhary, a Knight International Journalism Fellow working to train citizen journalists in rural India. Before that, he was a BBC South Asia producer for more than 10 years. * Bob Dietz, the coordinator of the Committee to Protect JournalistsAsia Program. *Karuna Nundy, an Indian Supreme Court lawyer and civil liberties advocate. *Rishi Majumder, a freelance journalist and the associate partner of a new media company Oijo. He’s also written for numerous different media outlets, including Yahoo and the newspapers Dawn and The Hindu. Here is why you should protest: http://pastehtml.com/view/ckmg6gtfa.rtxt This is Govt saying, they can still censor you if you speak against them. http://businesstoday.intoday.in/story/govt-modifies-sec-66-of-it-act-facebook-comment-actions/1/190257.html Free press is a myth in #India. Thanks to #ITAct #66A. With latest modifications, the Govt will have a better control. Hear this from a journalist himself: https://www.facebook.com/maheshmurthy/posts/10151273839572138 http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NewDelhi/Free-press-in-India-a-myth-66A-proves-it/Article1-965241.aspx The time to sit silent is gone. Call your friends and protest against the draconian law. Here you can find what happened during FSMI protests in Pune and it clearly shows the government's apathy towards free speech and expression. http://fsmi.in/content/press-release-condemn-disruption-protest-hooligansin-pune With this we want to draw your attention towards ITU which by now has become the global phenomena regarding privacy and surveillance in the internet. It can easily be assumed what can happen or has already happened behind closed doors in Dubai where the government bodies decided about regulating the internet. There are many reports yet to come but for now it is a known fact that Deep Packet Inspection has already been passed in the resolution. It adds an extra layer in monitoring the connection of one's internet. More about it can be found below: https://www.pcworld.com/article/249137/what_is_deep_packet_inspection_.html More regarding ITU can be found here http://tinyurl.com/7268yjv
