Caught on Tape: Political Party Activists Ransack Indian Newsroom http://www.indianexpress.com/news/mrs/544428/ In the name of their Boss, Sena goons attack IBN TV channels Nov 21, 2009 A MOB of Shiv Sainiks attacked and vandalised the offices of Hindi and Marathi TV news channels IBN7 and IBN-Lokmat in Mumbai and Pune on Friday for what they said was criticism of the party and its chief Bal Thackeray after his recent comments against cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, returning to its traditional brand of violent politics in the aftermath of its poor show in the Assembly elections. About 25 party activists barged into the common office of the two channels in suburban Vikhroli in the financial capital, armed with baseball bats, cricket stumps and iron rods. They broke glass facades, office equipment and assaulted some employees before fleeing the spot. In Pune, they attacked the outdoor broadcast van of the channels and damaged it, police said. Witnesses in Mumbai said the attackers shouted that they would not accept any criticism or reports criticising the Shiv Sena. They also called out for IBN Lokmats Editor-in-Chief Nikhil Wagle and manhandled him before the channels employees clashed with the attackers and detained three of them in the melee. Police said they had arrested seven Shiv Sainiks and were looking for more. A sports editor and a graphic artist injured in the attack were admitted to hospital, IBN said.

Global Journalist: India's press freedom problems India ranks abysmally low at 133 among 180 countries in the latest annual World Press Freedom Index, which says Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems “indifferent” to the threats against journalists. The 2016 ‘World Press Freedom Index’ released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is led by Finland, which retained its top spot for the sixth consecutive year, followed by Netherlands and Norway. India jumped three spots from the 136th position it had in 2015. “Journalists and bloggers are attacked and anathematised by various religious groups that are quick to take offense,” the report said. At the same time, it is hard for journalists to cover regions such as Kashmir that are regarded as sensitive by the government, it said. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems indifferent to these threats and problems, and there is no mechanism for protecting journalists,” the report said. “Instead, in a desire to increase control of media coverage, Modi envisages opening a journalism university run by former propaganda ministry officials,” it alleged, without substantiating what it refers to. Among India’s neighbouring countries, Pakistan ranks 147, Sri Lanka (141), Afghanistan (120), Bangladesh (144), Nepal (105) and Bhutan (94). China is ranked 176. The United States is ranked 44th and Russia is placed at the 148th place. The report shows that there has been a deep and disturbing decline in respect for media freedom at both the global and regional levels. Kashmir Can’t Be Described As India-Occupied Or India-Administered: India defends at UN In the same breath, the Indian delegation also defined terrorism as a violation of human rights and urged countries to acknowledge and condemn it as such. The Indian delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) stressed that Jammu and Kashmir was an integral part of the country’s territory. A member of the delegation addressing the UN human rights body said that “…describing any territory of India as India-occupied or India-administered…” was an aberration and not valid. The comments on Kashmir came in response to a statement by the Pakistan mission which made recommendations to India on Kashmir. This included suggestions to hold a plebiscite for Kashmir’s self-determination; ending the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA); banning pellet guns and allowing a free press to function in Kashmir. In the same breath, the Indian delegation also defined terrorism as a violation of human rights and urged countries to acknowledge and condemn it as such. While this novel view landed predictable applause in certain social media circles, it did not encompass the origin and spirit of the phrase “human rights”. A more apt description of terrorism would perhaps be an obstruction of in the delivery of human rights by a government which is ultimately responsible for it. This was the third time that India’s human rights record was under the UNHCR’s Universal Periodic Review. The first two were in 2008 and 2012 respectively. The delegation was led by attorney general of India, Mukul Rohatgi, assisted by additional solicitor general of India, PS Patwalia, and joint secretary-level officers of the union government ministries such as home affairs, external affairs, women and child development, rural development and also the NITI Ayog (the government’s think tank). At first, Rohatgi read out India’s response to the review process by responding with the action it had taken. The report answered questions raised by other countries on several human rights issues as well as on previous recommendations made by countries. There were also reports by UN agencies and the Indian National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that had raised issues. The bulk of Team Rohatgi’s responses included extracts from the Constitution of India, specific Indian laws, description of the justice system and also a number of government schemes thrown in for good measure. At least Singapore and Turkey seem to have come prepared with some Hindi. Their delegations to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) lauded the country’s working attitude of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikaas — the slogan that elected Narendra Modi to power. The two countries were also joined by Malaysia in applauding the StandUp India scheme of the Indian government. Also liberal in its praise was Mauritius. There was also praise for the Digital India campaign which could connect the large population. While, Turkey has recently been developing diplomatic relations with India, Mauritius and Singapore see a lot of trade ad foreign currency flows with India. Several countries were appreciative of India’s recently-enacted Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016. A bulk of the countries’ recommendations and remarks were directed at the following issues :: — ratifying the Convention Against Torture; bringing a law against torture — impose a moratorium on the death penalty — protect women from violence, including domestic violence and marital rape; prosecute those perpetrators of honour killings. — actively prevent human trafficking and prosecute those involved in the crime — protect for children; including suggestions to protect children from corporal punishment at home — strictures passed on foreign funding of NGOs — protection of human rights defenders working in India There were also strong recommendations to end discrimination based on sexual orientation. Noting the Indian Supreme Court’s recent judgement recognising transgenders, several countries asked that more work be done in this regard. Several nations also asked that India decriminalise homosexuality (as under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code). Team Rohatgi defended many of the remarks and warded off the recommendations. However, in some situations, they appeared to be marketing schemes launched by the government schemes .
